The mission of The Materials & Process Division is to be a leader in advancing the state-of-the-art of manufacturing processes through the development of new technology and by integrating legacy manufacturing with emerging technologies.
In the M&P Division, a team of multidisciplinary researchers utilize Industry 4.0 disruptive technologies – such as sensors and the Internet of Things (IoT), additive manufacturing, and next-generation materials – to create value in traditional manufacturing processes such as metalcasting, forming, joining and machining.
Together with academic researchers and industry partners, the group is driving technology-first, flexible, and efficient manufacturing solutions to boost US supply chain resilience and enable domestic manufacturers to compete in a global market. The Division aligns with CDME's fundamental objective of collaborating with industrial partners in applied research, while also providing support for the academic growth of undergraduate students engaged in research activities.
M&P comprises experts from the College of Engineering’s Center for Design and Manufacturing Excellence (CDME), the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and the Institute for Materials and Manufacturing Research (IMR).

What We Do
M&P works at the intersection of traditional manufacturing and cutting-edge technology. We take a holistic approach to studying the manufacturing process chain – from raw material to finished part – and targets opportunities to add value by injecting advanced technology.
The overarching objectives of our work are to create new pathways for manufacturing by augmenting traditional manufacturing process chains with advanced technology - and to train the future workforce along the way.
M&P is positioned to partner with a wide range of manufacturers and industries, and to solve problems that are immediately relevant. M&P works with the Department of Defense, the Department of Energy, NASA, the State of Ohio, the automotive, biomedical, nuclear industries and many others.
